Mike Waltz, former national security adviser, has been on shaky ground recently since the accidental addition of the Atlantic journalist, Jeffery Goldberg, to a signal group chat that included plans for forthcoming strikes on Yemen.
Earlier today, it was reported that Mike Waltz would be expected to depart from the national security adviser role in the coming days. Following this announcement, Trump then nominated Waltz to serve as a UN ambassador. This was a major shift in roles, as Waltz had lost most of his influence in the West Wing after he inadvertently added a journalist to a group chat filled with plans for high-sensitive military strikes.
“From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in congress, and as my national security adviser, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our nation’s interests first,” Trump said in a statement posted on X
Trump announced that Marc Rubio will be serving the roles of both secretary of State and interim national security adviser.
This would not be the first time Rubio has been asked to fill a role. In February, Rubio was asked to fill the role of National Archivist as Colleen Shogan was dismissed from her post by Trump.
That same month, Rubio was named as acting administrator for the United States Agency for International Development.
The last person to serve as secretary of State and national security adviser was Henry Kissinger under the Nixon administration from 1969-1974.
