On June 6, 2025, protests began in Los Angeles, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided several city locations. As the Los Angeles Police Department started holding ground all around the city, protesters began to clash with police officers and ICE agents turning several of the protests violent.
Over the weekend, President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to the city. The last time a President deployed a National Guard unit without a request from the state governor was in 1965 when Lyndon B. Johnson deployed them to protect civil right protestors in Alabama, although argue that President Trump is doing so to intimidate civil right protesters. It was announced earlier today that Trump authorized 700 Marines to support National Guard.
California then responded to the deployment by filing a lawsuit against the Trump Administration, asking a judge to declare the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles unconstitutional and requesting the court to halt any future deployments. California Governor, Gavin Newsom (D), commented on the deployments claiming it is “an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act.”
Meanwhile, Trump publicly voiced his support for the arrest of Gavin Newsom. Speaking to reporters at the White House Monday, the president responded to a question from Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy regarding the ongoing back-and-forth between Newsom and Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan
“Gavin Newsom is daring Tom Homan to come and arrest him,” Doocy proceeded to ask Trump, “Should he do it?”
Trump endorsed the idea, responding, “I would do it if I were Tom.”
Gavin Newsom responded on X, “This is a day I hoped I would never see in America. This is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”
As of publishing, ICE continue to target large cities. Tensions in Los Angeles are continuing to rise as Marines have made their way to many protesting areas. Protesters are continuing to make their point heard, as they call for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
