Editorial: Journalism Often Makes Me Feel Stuck

By Diego Martinez, Journalist

In my time as a reporter, I have written four stories about immigration and its current developments. I’ve informed others about recent enforcement efforts — which cities ICE is focusing on, who is being affected, and how these actions are being carried out. Despite this work, I often feel limited in what I can do.

The community I grew up in has been directly impacted by these enforcement actions. Many residents have expressed fear of being targeted because of their appearance, occupation, or language. I have listened to their accounts and watched the videos documenting their interactions with ICE agents. While I am committed to informing the public about these situations, I also feel a personal responsibility to support those affected.

Being an hour and a half away from these events sometimes makes me feel disconnected. I want to help give voice to people who may be hesitant to speak publicly due to fear or uncertainty.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, California Governor Gavin Newsom said, “I fear that we will not have an election in 2028.” Comments like these reflect broader concerns some have expressed about the state of U.S. democracy.

In covering politics over the past three years, I’ve observed increasing polarization across the political landscape. Terms like “authoritarianism” have appeared more frequently in public discussion, particularly during Trump’s second term. Reports of federal agents conducting detentions and deportations have raised questions among legal experts and civil rights organizations about due process and the limits of federal authority.

Amid these debates, journalism remains essential. Reporters continue to face criticism and restrictions in their work, yet the role of the press — to inform, verify, and hold institutions accountable — is as important as ever.

Although I cannot be directly involved in on-the-ground efforts, I remain dedicated to my work as a journalist. My goal is to continue producing accurate, transparent reporting and to help the public better understand the events shaping our society.
